Phoenix Travel Guide

Everything you need for an unforgettable stay in the Valley of the Sun.

Phoenix blends year-round sunshine, world-class golf and spas, desert adventure, and a fast-growing food scene. We are Zina and Mark, your hosts at ZM Stays in the Desert Ridge corner of North Phoenix, and this is the guide we wish every guest read before arriving — when to come, how to get around, and the things our guests rave about again and again.

When to Visit (Month by Month)

November through February is why snowbirds exist: daytime highs of 65–75°F, crisp 45°F evenings perfect for the fire pit, and almost guaranteed sunshine. March and April bring 75–90°F days, Cactus League spring training, and peak wildflowers — it is the busiest (and priciest) season, so book 2–3 months ahead.

May is the sleeper pick: 90–95°F, pool weather all day, and crowds thin out before summer. June through August runs hot — typically 104–106°F at peak — but this is when the house shines as a resort: our unheated saltwater pool is at its best, rates are at their lowest, and the July–August monsoon delivers dramatic evening lightning shows. September stays warm (around 100°F), and October drops back to a glorious 88°F.

A practical note from us: the pool is comfortably swimmable from roughly mid-April through mid-October, and the hot tub is heated year-round — so there is no bad month for a soak under the stars.

Getting Around & Drive Times From the House

The house sits two minutes from the Loop 101, which makes the whole Valley easy. Real-world drive times our guests report: Desert Ridge Marketplace and groceries ~5 minutes; Mayo Clinic ~10 minutes; Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter ~12 minutes; TPC Scottsdale ~15 minutes; Old Town Scottsdale ~20 minutes; Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport ~25 minutes; Downtown Phoenix ~25–30 minutes.

You will want a car — Phoenix is a driving city — but rideshares are quick in our area (typically 5–10 minutes for pickup) and a smart choice for an Old Town evening. The garage fits two cars and includes a Level 2 EV charger; there is more room on the driveway and free street parking out front.

Neighborhoods to Know

Desert Ridge (you live here this week): master-planned, quiet, and convenient, with the Marketplace, High Street dining, and the JW Marriott golf courses. Kierland & Scottsdale Quarter (~12 min): the Valley’s best open-air shopping and a dense cluster of excellent restaurants. Old Town Scottsdale (~20 min): art galleries and museums by day, wine rooms and a famously lively bar scene by night.

Downtown Phoenix (~25–30 min): Roosevelt Row street art, the Heard Museum, Chase Field, and a genuinely great coffee scene. Cave Creek (~25 min): Old-West storefronts, hearty barbecue, and desert trail rides — a fun half-day with kids or visitors who want “real Arizona.”

Our Guests’ Favorite Day

If you ask us to plan one perfect day, here is the one guests tell us about in reviews: start with sunrise on the Lookout Mountain trail (8 minutes away, about an hour up and back, city views the whole way). Reward yourselves at Snooze, an A.M. Eatery at Desert Ridge — get the pancake flight.

Spend midday somewhere cool: the Musical Instrument Museum is 8 minutes away and routinely the highlight of our guests’ trips (allow 2–3 hours; kids love the giant gong room). Then it is pool-and-hot-tub time at the house until golden hour. Finish with dinner at Kierland — handmade pasta at North Italia or the warm butter cake at Mastro’s Ocean Club — and end the night around our fire pit. Nobody has ever complained about this day.

Day Trips Worth the Drive

Sedona’s red rocks are 2 hours north — leave by 7 AM, hike Cathedral Rock or Devil’s Bridge before the crowds, lunch in Tlaquepaque, and you are home for an evening swim. The Grand Canyon’s South Rim is 3.5 hours — a long but absolutely doable day trip in the cooler months.

Closer in: float the Salt River (~30 minutes, May–September) and keep an eye out for the wild horses; Saguaro Lake and the Apache Trail make a beautiful half day; and Montezuma Castle, a remarkably preserved cliff dwelling, is 90 minutes north and pairs well with a Sedona run.

Summer Survival, From Your Hosts

We live here — summer is genuinely great if you play it like a local. Hike at sunrise (trailheads at 5:30 AM are busy for a reason), do indoor attractions from noon to four (MIM, OdySea Aquarium, a movie at Desert Ridge), then swim from four until sunset when the light is unbeatable.

The house helps: the saltwater pool runs 8 AM–10 PM, pool toys and beach towels are in the garage, the ceiling fans and A/C keep things at whatever temperature you like, and the covered patio stays shady all afternoon. Hydrate double what you think you need, and never skip sunscreen — the desert sun does not negotiate.
